I also love this dude's stance- that's what I'm after.

that bus was up forsale a few months ago it was really nice and a decent price for us Brits, he even included shipping.

Johnny do you know what the suspension setup was on that bus? I sent a PM to the owner on thesamba and never got a response. Damn I wish I could have seen the ad.

Well yesterday was my very first Father's day and I got to spend some time on the camper. I'm going to try to drive it to make sure the transmission is good and put both the engine and transmission into the Deluxe. That way I don't risk putting the engine in the Deluxe only to find out that the transmission is bad. I only want to do it once.

So that means I have to fix all the effed up stuff in the camper from what looks like an attempt to steal it. It sure was a bitch to remove the ignition cylinder and disable the steering lock. I'm still worried the steering lock is going to engage randomly engage while I'm driving it. Also trying to bolt up the mangled ignition lock housing to the dash was a lot of fun too. I had to make a few adjustments to the hurst style shifter because it was missing some hardware.

I started out with this:

And ended up with this:

The giant dent in the roof was bugging me so I spent some time on that. Started with this:

I removed the rear overhead storage (which was already falling down from what was probably a kid jumping on the roof) so I could pop out the dent with using my back/shoulders, which gave this result:

It sure seems roomier back there without that shelf! The roof dent is mostly gone, all that is left is a stain and a small dent that I couldn't fix without removing the headliner to get to it. Good enough for now.

Next I have to put the correct wheels/tires back on since these Audi wheels don't fit properly, and then I'm buying a compressor so I can install that time-sert for that stripped spark plug.

i actually had some pictures sent as i was interested at the time (cant find them now). It sold fast and i went for a microbus in the end.

It had a wagenswest beam and horseshoe plates at the rear and he said the ride was really good.

Thanks fellas!

Johnny do you remember if the wagenswest beam was narrowed?

pretty sure it was stock with adjusters

Cool, thanks Johnny.

Well today my upholstery for the Deluxe arrived which was kind of a surprise. I haven't gotten around to ordering the pads yet. I'm pretty happy with how the pattern looks. It's a little hard to tell but these have vertical heat seams, not horizontal like stock. I had hoped for the stock seams but oh well, these are pretty damn cool. The printed vinyl looks like cloth but it's easier to clean.

My buddy is coming over Saturday to put in the Time-sert so hopefully we'll be able to get the spark plug back in and take the camper for a cruise...

I opened the rear bench seat covers and the orientation of the pattern is 90 degrees off! It goes horizontal instead of vertical. Go Westy is going to find out from TMI how I should return it for a replacement.

I'm glad I'm not in a hurry to put these on!

It's road trip time, I took next week off and we're going to take my son down to San Diego to visit some family. Stoked!

Gregg came over and installed the time-sert yesterday and today I fired it up and drove the camper around the block checking all four gears to make sure there's no grinding, whining, or popping out of gear. Success! :party0053:

The next step is to toss this engine and transmission into the deluxe and it'll be ready to roll! So stoked!

Nope I don't know that Greg and he lives an hour away. I somehow doubt he'd be willing to make house calls  .

My buddy is Gregg Smith of The Parts House here in Modesto. We go way back to when I was about 16 years old. He's an endless source of advice, specialized tools for borrowing, and the occasional house call to get me out of a tough spot. Tons of respect for the dude.

Fun thread, I enjoyed the photos very much.
Back in the Madera photos you showed those Beetle quarter window scoops...any idea who it was that was selling them? I have a car that has those on it but one of them is damaged and it would be awesome to get that pair!

And that freakshow Bus buggy thing has my head spinning...gotta have it!

Hey, great news about the engine and gearbox P. Coming along nicely there. :D Been to any shows lately?

Thanks man! I'm pretty happy with it so far.

There was a show in Oakdale yesterday, which is fairly close by, but I was so beat from the road trip to San Diego that I didn't feel like heading over there. It's an all weekend camping show, so maybe next year we'll take the bus! :)

Hey Mr. Oldbug, welcome to the forums! I just checked out your thread and I have to say I'm a little jealous of your plans to take that bus over to the UK. What an awesome adventure that will be.

As far as the quarter window scoops, I didn't catch the guy's name who was selling them. He was from the bay area. Feel free to use my photo for a WTB ad if you'd like, maybe he'll see it. Do you know anything about the origins of those scoops?

From what I've seen of your freakshow VW collection, that farm buggy would fit right in!

Well I think I'm going to take a brief hiatus from the bus project and replace all of the engine parts I stole off of my bug to make the bus engine run. I just picked up a new Bosch blue coil and finally I bought a pertronix ignitor for my 009. I'm going to put those on and get my bug running so I can bring it out because I miss it.

Okay so my bug now runs better than it has in YEARS! I'm so stoked, all of my VW engines will now run a Pertronix instead of points. I didn't have to take my son to the babysitter today so I got to drive my bug to work. I'm happy. :D

Back to the bus project now! I've been going back and forth with TMI to get my bench seat upholstery replaced because the vinyl orientation is 90 degrees off from the rest of the upholstery. They asked for a picture of the incorrect seat cover so I took one- I figured I may as well put it up on here to show what went wrong.

IMGP1529.jpg

I just sent the pic off to GoWesty who will in turn send it to TMI who will hopefully make me a new one and take this one back. We'll see what they say...

Good news, TMI is making a new rear bench seat cover for me, and paying all the shipping and stuff to return the incorrect cover. So far, GoWesty and TMI have been pretty good to me.

Here's what the parking lot at work looked like yesterday  .

On the way home I stopped at a local dealer to take a picture of these cars, just for giggles.

Laid out Impala:

Donk'd out Camaro on 26's:

Just another day in Northern California...

No joke about that Camaro, it's pretty horrible.

My friend's four year old said "That's a clown car. No one will drive it.".

That kid knows what he's talking about.
