72 crossover rear bumper onto an early?

Well my early bumper I got with my van turns out to be a 72 only bumper and won't fit on my van. Shame as it's in great condition and also has the splash panels.
I considered making it fit but it seems a shame to drill a good crossover bumper. Has anyone ever done it? I think I'd just have to get early irons and drill it.

As above, they sell for a good couple of hundred quid in decent nick (see Graham L's recent for sale post) - They're not particularly easy to find especially in good condition.

I might be looking to swap yet as not sure if the rear bumper I have is for a crossover my van is a 71
