I`ve never done a service on a bus before but have done many on `modern` cars!

etc etc

Cheers guys and gals

On a stock engine, keep the stock oil bath or paper air filter. The aftermarket pancake ones suck ;)

As to the rest, you need to do:

oil
tappets / valves
points + condensor
dizzy arm + cap if needed.
timing (make sure you have a vac dizzy not 009 on a stock engine...)
carb mixture check :)
spark plugs
check fuel hoses for leaks etc.

You will need an oil change kit (50P-ish from GSF and 2 valve cover gaskets (£1) ish plus the oil and other parts.

Sure there is more i've forgotten.

I c! Is it not a good idea to have 009 on a stock lump then as mine has one and a friend has had problems with his and resorted back to vacuum!!! :?:

What about the strainer etc? can you reuse this???

What are the best plugs and leads to use???

Cheers

Grease gun all 5 of the beam nipples, check and repack wheel bearings, check brake cylinders and linings, replace brake fluid, check all steering and suspension joint for play, check steering box and gearbox oil levels.Theres sure to be more, get a haynes manual.

I personally don't like the 009, it works only on engine speed whereas the vac/centrifugal dizzies work on both engine speed and engine load. The 009 is fine for drag racing, but you'll get better MPG and less chance of flat spots with a vac :)

The strainer can be washed in petrol and re-used.

I used champion plugs in my bug, and bosch seem fine too.
I buy most of my service parts from GSF as they are cheap - buy the german quality bits where there is an option though.

009s are plop on stock, vac dizzy works bet definately.

I usually change all the cables and pump every 2 years aswell. I really hate it when a cable snaps. Its a reet pain in the bot!

Fanbelt at every service and keep it all well greased beam etc.

Dont forget to keep them moving twin carb parts greased aswell or this can throw em out.

Regarding oil, i had my engine overhauled and was told by a builder with 50+ years of aircooled experience and many race and rally engines under his belt to only use semi-synthetic oil, with ordinary 10/40 duckhams being his oil of choice, dont use Morris etc as he told me it was plop as well and if you do you will need to change it every 3K, and additives in the duckhams oil keep the oil-seal supple.

He only changes every 10K with duckhams as he said its more than sufficient with new semi synthetic.

There was Morris in mine and he said you should have seen the crap in my strainer  .

I happened to be reading an interesting article about the amount of oil flushed away by VW and aircooled owners each year which ran into millions of gallons, most just poured it down the drain as they didnt have proper disposal facilities. It only takes 1 gallon of oil to contaminate 1 million litres of water, food for thought.

So me changing it every 1k is excessive then

i dunno really but he laughed at me when i mentioned about the next oil change. I guess it should come with a disclaimer, but theres no counting for experience.
