additional dormobile wiring

i am looking into why the light on my dashboard doesn't work. the switch in the roof creates an earth. following the wire down the a pillar, it comes out and goes into a brown bakalite circular box. what is this box?

it has 3 wires. the earth continues to the light, and the positive to the light comes from the box (as far as i can see).

i guess the other wire to the box is a +ve.

so is ita relay? if it is why is needed?

any ideas?

I think its a very primitive flasher unit - I fiddled around with mine a few years ago and got it working - fairly sure that the orangey yellow warning light flashes if ignition is on with roof up.
