The beam looks like a home made lash up. Both tubes are welded about a foot either side of the adjusters and it should have a couple of those type adjusters in or a folksy.

Bin the beam and start again, if you want a narrowed beam there are many places out there and if you want stock a beam and leaves start from £200 -you can then fit adjusters (CE or similar) to both tubes, happy days

See pic of unmessed with stock original beam

hi for the newbie here can you tell me why the location of the welds is such a problem? I understand welds are bad and a contious tube is infinitly better however ive seen lots of beams cut and welded in the middle and other positions on many vans on show over the summer

I am tight on cash, would it not just be better to put another adjuster on the bottom? or is there something fundamentally wrong with the beam?

thanks

Hi
I'd just put another adjuster on the bottom ;) .The reason your van isn't going lower is because the top adjuster is set at its max drop. The bottom tube is still in its original position, thus holding the van up(more strain on the bottom ).Fitting another adjuster will release some of this tension and lower your van.Ive pm'd you a template(well im going to  )The marks are for stock height (where the pinch bolts are on a stock beam)
print this off and position it on your beam and see how far your top adjuster is out.If it has been welded on wrong ,grind the welds off and re position it.Make sure the beam has been slotted first.fit your bottom adjuster put it all back together and away you go
Theres nothing wrong (Looking at your Pic) with how your beam has been cut and welded...........

a sweeping statement ;) but granted it looks ok....I tend to sleeve the beams when narrowed to give that extra confidence.....I'm not sure I've seen a bay beam broken by an impact at the poor welds? bugs - yes -as the way they are held and if you get a large knock on one side due to clipping a curb [ ] then the tubes if not welded right can break..........
