Anyone got any creative thoughts on what speakers to buy and where to place them when you don't want to cut holes in door panels or the drop down flap in the R&R bed :?:

No audio system in place so totally starting from scratch

You could fit one speaker where the original one was, under the dash.

I've also seen someone fitted 2 under the dash facing the floor.

in my old westy i used mdf 6x9 speaker boxes, advantage of long speaker wire is you can use them in your awning too

you can get them from any car audio shop

fronts i put in the kick panels

I did this in my first bus, and have done something very similar in my bus now. I have taken the OG kick panels out and made MDF panels and covered with Acoustic cloth. Really pleased with the sound and how they look. I'll post a pic when I get the bus out of the garage next.

Thanks Jon
Liking the look of that. I've bought a pair of replacement kick panels on the recent group buy, so I think I'll use those and store the original panels which are in pretty good nick somewhere safe and sound. Any particular make to go with your alpine head unit, or do you tend to stick with alpine speakers as well?

What speakers did you use there?

In this pic it was my old 72 and I used a set of Infinity Mids and Tweeters, they sounded great but their new designs of speakers sound good but look a bit garish for an old van.

My new speakers are very similar - http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6583_JL+Audio+TR650-CSi.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bottom end of the JL Audio range but having worked for Halfrauds for 3 years fitting Audio in my distant past I know that unless you spend a lot of time and money you will never notice the difference in a car/van. As long as you buy good quality.

I will post a pic later if I can.

Here is a slightly cheaper option but would work well off an Alpine Head unit:

Kenwood: KFC-S702P - 17cm components

I didn't want to cut out holes for speakers so just removed the drop down flap and made a panel to mount them in:

Thinking long term of getting some of the surface mount blaupunkts to put under the dash

Thanks one and all.
After talking to Car Audio Direct thinking of going for the JVC KD R901 head unit as I want to use my creative mp3 player and try and use the bluetooth connection for the mobile. Also has USB connectivity which may yet be the answer. Not mounting in the dash as I have space behind the drivers seat where there is already a mounting bracket for the radio from when the bus was in SA and the advantage of the JVC unit is it comes with a remote control as well. Its got good write ups on several forums even against the Alpine and is a great price at about £165.

Speaker wise looks like utilising the new group buy kick panels and I think I will try and source another drop down panel and attach the other speakers there. That way I keep all the fittings to turn it back to 'original' when the time comes. Just need to measure up to see what size and make of speakers I can use so that they are in keeping with the older style decor in the bus

Rubbish photo's due to being so dark in the garage at the moment.

I have never found that the JVC sound quite so well rounded as the alpine's but they may have changed vastly in the past few years.

Digging up an old thread but any updates on where people mount there speakers?
My van has no speakers fitted anywhere, well there was 2 mounted in the ceiling panels but they looked naff and didn't fit correctly so need somewhere else.
Need to fit 4 speakers, ideally 2 in the front and 2 in the rear, so any ideas?

I was looking at fitting one of these in the original speaker location http://www.mamotorworkstv.com/vw/pr...e-coil-speaker-with-ultra-thin-basket-319422/ as you get stereo sound from one single speaker, with no hole cutting or wrecking trim.

As for the rear pair, I did originally think of fitting a pair of Eunos seats, as these have speakers in-built to the headrests but never got that far with either due to illness :(

I'm planning on using, pod speakers, I mounted these under the dash back in the days when I had my beetle,
sounded not too bad, not sure what the sound will be like in a van though.

Here they are:

For some reason they range from this price right up to £125, can't see much difference between them though!

On the subject of using the original speaker location, is there a maximum depth that the speaker would need to be to not foul the radio?

Anyone have any speaker recommendations for this? I looked at yours jaybee but as it's in the US of A puts me off a little!
