After reading this http://type2.com/bartnik/relay.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on another thread, I think my bus would benefit from one of these. The kit suggested only seems to be available in the states, so just wondered if anyone has made one up using an off the shelf relay? if so which relay did you use, and where did you buy it from? many thanks, steve.

I'm in the process of making mine.
It's jus a 4 pin lov voltage relay, I picked mine up in the local auto electrical place for a few quid, I expect chavfords will have them.
Follow the wiring diagram, job done for a few quid.

alternatively you could try peter good at http://volksgoods.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
ive had a few bits n bobs of him, always good service and everything comes with full instructions.
nice bloke too.

I wish I knew of him a while ago I've just replaced my alternator.

they are just a standard relay 4pin (1) on this page

you can also get a fused version - which I did wonder would be better?

there's another diagram here

it will help reduce the possibility of a current overload as the current is switched direct at the relay as opposed to travelling all the way to the ignition switch...hot start issues I have found tend to be bush at the end of the starter shaft, I've had 3 do this and all three were fixed by the bush....might be a fluke who knows?

As above.

Have not experienced it myself, but have heard many times that the starter bush in the bell-housing is the cause of many starting problems.

Hannover didn't see the need to fit a 'hot start relay', therefore one is not needed. If there is a problem with hot starting, there is a fault somewhere which needs rectifying. Fitting one of these relays is just masking the problem.

Other than the aforementioned starter bush and the obvious checks on integrity of the standard wiring and conections, I'm afraid I can't offer any other simple answer. So long as the solenoid can be heard clicking in as normal, I would suggest the problem lies once the huge current draw from the starter motor occurs, hence the starter bush/motor theory stands up?

Good luck and happy (fault) hunting! :D

Try changing your coil first.. Common problem having experienced it myself :mrgreen:

cheers chaps. I don't have a real problem with hot start, but I do sometimes get the voltage drop problem when hot starting, but the bus has always started hot. just thought for a few quid it might solve the voltage drop thing. makes alot of sense to me shortening the journey of the electrical current.
