I was looking at one of these but just mounting the engine on the two bottom engine bolts must put a massive strain on the case with the cantilevered weight.

Is this a fair point or are the cases well up to it?

I want an engine stand to get my Type 4 engine sorted so it's going to be heavier then a T1 engine which is why I'm a little unsure, the last thing I need is for a complete T4 motor to land on my foot!

dude, machine mart do good ones, they hold the engine with four bolts, and are chep as chips.

here you go

I know, I bought one of these but then realised when I tried to get the motor on that it won't fit the engine without making an adapter which when I looked at it isn't as simple as I thought it would be.

Basically the 'X' shape extension bars aren't long enough in span to reach the locations of the four engine bolts, plus the forward extensions from the ends of these aren't long enough to clear the freewheel and if they were, you'd still have to be careful that in clamping the engine you didn't damage the beveled edge that locates inside the gearbox bell housing as they just have hollow tubular ends as the mounting face.

I guess I'll have to take another look at it, I'd rather spend the time playing with the engine though instead of fannying around making adapters to put it on the stand.

I have a Machine Mart one, it holds engines, including Type 4's, on 3 bolts without any problem. Youre right, the 4 arms wont all connect but 3 are fine.

Cool, OK, I'll give that a go.

I didn't really think to use just three.

Sometimes when you get stuck on one detail it takes someone else to point out the obvious.

Thanks for that :D

Yep as Clem says i have one and 3 is fine.

Hi,

I got a machinemart one as well. Found that I couldn't mount my Type-4 engine on it with the standard brackets. So just drilled a couple of extra holes further down the arms and this worked a treat and you can use all four arms.

get a bell housing from a gearbox from a subaru conversion place for cheap then bolt that on - engine fits perfectly every time then & can be easily bench run on the stand - did it myself last week. got my bellhousing from rjes for £5 + post.

Finding a spare bell housing is definitely the way to go. And if you have a spare starter, battery and jerry can to hand you can test run the engine before refitting it in the van.

Loxy you got any contact details, want to do the same....
I got mine from this guy: http://www.rjes.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He hasnt got any listed at the moment but give him a ring - hes a nice helpful guy.

Question.

How do you get the engine onto the stand or am i being stoopid?

Looking at MMarts stands it looks like you have to offer the engine up to the stand then bolt it in....... But how do you do that with something so heavy?

If you build up the engine on the stand, how do you get it off?

Or are all of the stands hydrallic that lift them from the floor?

depends on what / who you have at hand....

easiest way two people offering the engine up and the missus bringing in the coffee can put them down and bolt it up....

If its already broken then its a doddle

or if your lucky to have a block and tackle/hoist

I have done it on my own once when I was a young contorsionist, not recommended. (that and other stupid stunts may be the reason my backs fooked)

Yeah was a bit of an animal in the day..... who needs trolley jacks to lower engines out of a bug, brute strength, ignorance and a spine of steel, I'm a little more refined these days
