Drove the van to Brixham for a weekends diving with a mate, and the van started to backfire.
Mainly does it when letting of the throttle going down a hill.
Sounds cool, but cant be doing the engine any good.
why has it just started to do it. :?

And yes i made it up Telegraph hill no problems this time. :D

Sounds like an air leak somewhere.

Check your inlet manifold rubbers and the seal between the carb and manifold etc.

Its usually caused by a hole in the exhaust system, check your header and silencer etc for blown gaskets, holes etc.

Did notice a few days ago when looking at the exhaust that there was some black soot on the rh lower corner and when putting throttle down baffles sounds like they are droaning. 8)

Sounds a bit like a big bore exhaust.

Every now and again mine starts to backfire pretty bad - last time was a combination of a bolt loosening on my merged header and my points were pitted pretty bad and out of adjustment.

If your still running the standard points and condenser it could be as simple as just these needing replacing or adjusting?

Don't forget to check the timing too!
