Bay window steering idler pin replacement?

Anyone an approx cost to get a garage to do this or is it easy enough to do myself ?

any tips would be a great help

Excuse my non technical terms..

Remove nut and bolt from top of the steering idler(there should be a tab washer to bend out of the way 1st)
Lift steering mechanism away upwards
pop off tin cap from bottom of the idler pin on the beam... slide out steering idler
I didnt do the bushes but they should just push out

Assembly is just the reverse, note the order of washers when dismantling.

Grease the nipple (oo er) and done job!

If there is 2 bronze bushes then once you have fitted them they will need to be true'd with a reamer to get them spot on. Or is that just splits?
 
Some kits have bushes that need reaming and others seem to be spot on - not a problem if you have an adjustable reamer. The main problem is getting the bushes out and back in. DON'T batter them with hammer and drift!

Make up a simple puller from some threaded rod and big washers/plates (builders merchants sell them for bolting in beams) - you'll need two plates and one washer that just fits inside the housing. Then just pull the bushes out downwards with your puller - big plate on bottom and washer on top- and pull the new ones in from the top. The top bush should be 1mm proud of the housing. You must clamp the swing arm on to the pin with a large G clamp to compress the spring washer BEFORE you try to slide in the pinch bolt. And I mean SLIDE in - do not batter it in or you will ruin the thread.

Just splits dude, mine were spot for the bay. Worth a try using a puller but if they are as tight as mine were you will end up using a big hammer. I finished up making a 'dolly' to hammer them out with.
 
is this really as easy as this sounds, i'm hoping this will fix my steering problem so i dont have to shell out for a steering box? 15mins?? in the bentley manual it says you have to disconnect the tie rods, steering damper and drag link before you even get started! sounds like you dont need to do this?? can someone clear this up.
 
Did mine a couple of weeks back, I did as BJ1 and got a puller made up. I found that you did not need to disconnect the drag link and tie rods, as you could push them up and backwards.

If your doing the the bushes it take a lot longer than 15mins.

The bushes in mine were a bitch to get out even with a puller, but the new ones went in more easily and did not require reaming. Make sure you remove the grease nipple first.

The other thing to make sure of is that the pin and clamp bolt hole not only line up with the G-clamp on, but also in the rotational axis. I knackered 1 bolt is not ensuring these were lined up. :oops: Get someone to turn the steering wheel slightly until you feel the bolt catch the threads in the clamp.

It's a job that once your committed and have moved the bushes it a one way street, so be careful and good luck.

used the above link as a guide, and did this when i got home from work today, the old stuff was all tight and in good shape, but i replaced it all anyway!! one piece of advice for anyone doing this tho,....... use a good quality G clamp with a big base on it, it will make your life so much easier.

only made a small amount of difference to the feel of my steering, but i'm still glad i did it. Need to get my tracking done again, at a garage that can cope with a lowered van.

anyone else given this a go recently?
