Hi All

Can anyone recommend some wide-5 hubcaps that will last more than a couple of years
without costing the earth ?

I have some (admittedly cheap ones) about 3 years old that have shed their chrome like a snake-skin in spite of the fact I undersealed them from the inside and kept them pretty dry and salt free. I have thought I could get these re-chromed properly for less than decent
new ones - any other thoughts ?

Cheers

James

Not JK ones then.

Surface rust from the rain after well less than a year, and always clean and polish them. Rubbish. And dont even ask about the eyelids............

i doubt if you can buy new ones that will last the test of time, i would say your best bet would be to try and contact an importer they may have second hand ones from busses they have fitted alloys too, and lets face it 30 odd year old VW ones will be 100% better than new repro tat!

heritage do a top quality version, about £39 per hub though!! item 3........

Yep I saw them  - hence my 'good value' comment. If the consensus is that they're all cr@p apart form the top notch VWH ones then I'll go for local re-chrome. I had some (Laverda) motor bike parts done some years back quite reasonably and the re-chrome outlasted the Italian original stuff by a good margin.

Hopefully less than 20 quid apiece ??

Cheers

I got some from Retro dubs about 2 years ago and they are still as good as the day i bought them.

That'd make you wince if one got kerbed, nicked or pinged off when the notoriously crap clips give out. (they do fly well though, I saw a mates one get at least 30ft of air when it fell off on the motorway, would have stopped to pick it up but it happened just as we were going over a bridge above a river  )

Think I'll stick to my cheapo ones!

got a quote from the chrome platers today - if I bought cheap repo, they would triple plate them for £35 (triple plate chrome=chromed properly, not a tin foil job) so best option may be to go for expensive Heritage ones,.............providing, they are triple plated of course.

If you get repros then paint the insides throughly with Ankor Wax or Waxoyl and they will last several times as long.
I searched for good og ones at first but gave up in the end ....

You cant really protect eyebrows from rust, and thats no bad thing. :cooter:

what about these ones.........

just received a set from Autocraft and they are excellent quality, well worth 40quid each. Polished and put straight onto newly powdered coated stock rims with thin white walls :D :) :D

I bought some repro's from a german at "kever winter festijn" for 30 euro, about 30 pounds( 8) sorry for that ;) )

you can't get them rechromed for that cash...

I just got some repo from VW status online discount for a set of 4 £25. Okay maybe not great but for that price with a gamble.

at least if you kerb one or it comes flying off - its not too painfull on the wallet!

that my thinking, and the vans garaged, so just going to keep a lot of polish etc on the caps to keep them shiney
