Have just fitted a JK towbar to my x-over. Will post a link to some pictures.

When on quite easily, but instructions were a bit vague.

Hi Just,

Here are a few shots of the towbar installation. I would advise running a tap through the mounting holes before fitting.

A bit tight on the exhaust heat shield (whats left of it anyway)

Had to bend the bumper a bit to get it back on, could of cut it. This is probably due to the bumber being knocked at some point in the past. Had to do a bit of strraightening before I repainted it.

Used piggy back spade connectors to connect the electrics on the rear light clusters.

Finally, it being used to show off our Westy trailer 8) (sorry just had to add it)

Loving the whole look you got going on!

Great pictorial thanks! The kit for the Early Bay is slightly different i assume.........Were the fixing holes already in the chassis?

Hi,

This kit was for a x-over, which is a one year only kit. There is a different part number listed for the 68-71. The 8 captive bolts were already in the chassis legs, the 2 lower bolts on each side are the bumper irons fixings, which I think would be similar for a 68-71.

So its simply a bolt-on kit, cool. Something else on the to-do list

Hi!

So i guess the early bay one is changed because of the removeable rear valence? This is what i need.....How much are these BTW, there was talk on the forum of remaking the Westy ones IIRC....

The JK one is £115 (just ordered one) the ball, bolts and electrics are extra, tho i have a supplier for these, but all quiet reasonable i thought

Just ordered one as well as I need to tow a trailer to Oktoberfest

I also ordered the extra mounting bolts, but the JK hitch included two ball hitch mounting bolts. So could have saved a bit (only a couple of £ though).

Hope the fitting goes alright.

Wish you said that last night

Just tried to fit this and guess what it doesn't fit!!, offered up the first bracket on the rhs and it fowls the exhaust, now I'm not running a big box or anything just a VW Speedshop rear box on a standard set of headers

Nowhere on the JK site does it warn it won't fit with anything other than a standard rear box (well not that I could see) but looking how far the brackets come down they will foul most aftermarket back boxes.

I guess a phone call to JK is in order on Monday morning :(

Sorry to here you had problems.

Was close to the std. exhaust as you can see on the pictures above.

I suppose they have to design for the standard system, but they should at least, put a warning as many people run modified system.

Is that a standard rear box you are running?, I have to say that I think the 68 -72 would foul most exhausts as the first set of brackets come straight down from the rear chassis rails by about 6" and then head backwards to the back of the van at that height, certainly nothing like the one you have fitted to your crossover.

Reading with interest, I have a standard exhaust on my early, been away this weekend so havnt had chance to fit up the brackets.

Hi Graham,

I have got a std. system for a type 4 motor (US Westy). The brackets for this kit were only about 2-3inches down from the chassis.

My kit was manufactured by Watling Engineers. If yours is the same it might be worth giving them a call to see if they have any ideas as to what can be done.

Cheers,

Simon

Yes its from the same company but is nothing like yours at all, the instructions are very vague and the first pieces you mount use the 3 holes in the chassis rail but come straight down and hence foul the rear box straight away, i'm slightly confused why a modified version of what you have wouldn't fit as it sits tighter to the chassis rails.

I think they have designed this so you can still take the removable rear valance off with the towbar on but I can't see why
