Just called JK and not quite the response I was expecting.

They say their towbars fit with all types of exhaust including their sports exhaust which looks identical to the VW speedshop one I have got fitted. They are suggested that I've either got non standard headers which is incorrect or my backbox is causing the problem. They want me to take photos to prove it doesn't fit!!

They will refund my money if I want to return it but I will have to pay for the carriage which when the towbar weighs 17kg is a tenner down the drain so not overimpressed. Will take photos to prove the point to them but they are not prepared to accept it won't fit or its the Speedshop box which is at fault not them!!

Apparently its my fault as I have a 'beetle rear box' but its identical to the empi box I took off the van so I'm not sure whose right, according to JK a van rear box should follow the line of the bumper rather than tuck in, is this correct?. Photos below of offending rear box and bracket. I still cannot see how it would fit if the box ran parallel with the rear bumper as the second bar in the kit would still foul but they assure me they sell hundreds of these and have never had one not fit, oh and it fits their early bay.

Hi Graham,

That was never going to fit.

It looks like it is about 5-6" too long. I'm not 100%, but it looks like a genuine Westy towbar would work, but I only have pictures I have seen to base that on. I think Faux (jon) has one on his bus, might be worth asking for a couple of pictures.

Cheers,

Si

Sorry these are the best pics I have.

I still have the og box due to the hassle I have had in the past with after market boxes.

I don't suppose you would fancy taking your towbar off and lending the mounting brackets? so I/someone could get some copies made?, I have the centre section but no brackets to go with it.

Si

I know what you mean, I think if the down brackets shown were about 2-3 inches shorter it would fit over the top of the tailbox, I can't for the life of me see how it would fit with any other box as its simply too low :?:

Hi Graham

I could have a go a when the weather sets in, I use the bar quite a bit at the moment. Puck and Westy trailer

It may be worth speaking to Ianscooby as I know he had the same issue and sorted it using the og brackets.

I would tack the bar in place, remove and beef up with additional plating. Job done.
