Has anyone out there replaced their Brake Servo unit on a 1971 LHD bay?? Bought the Brazillian one from Heritage but even with a little adjustment it wont fit?? My mechanic bought an ATE one & that doesn't fit either. Please help from rather frustrated bus owner!!

My mechanic told me this about the Brazilian one "the central bore of the adapter plate is too wide for the original mounting plate, also due to the size of the mounting plate the only position they could fit it, the axle beams are in the way". Will need to ask about the OE one. Have you fitted an OE one?

No I haven't except its made by the original supplier (ATE) and as far as I know is identical.

I would be surprised an ATE one doesn't fit. They have the 72mm stud spacing as the originals. Ask your mechanic to check. Maybe he has been supplied the wrong type.

I've just had a look at my old beam and can see the problem with the Brazilian servo. The original mounting plate is only just big enough to get the new holes in or extend the old holes, but the studs on the new servo will be very close to the beam tubes and difficult if not impossible to get a nut on.

Hopefully, someone who has successfully fitted a Brazilian servo to an EB will be along and tell you how to do it.

Please keep us posted as I need to replace my servo in the next few months when the bus is back on the road.

I've a feeling the ATE servo will be the way to go for a hassle free life, but hell expensive!

It looks like others have had issues with the ATE one also:

I'd love to know what will fit because its on my list of things to sort out....

Yep, good news, the Brazilian is fitted & working just fine, no more revving up when I brake. If you use the pattern shown in the Heritage book, you need to drill 4 new holes in the mounting plate but, the holes cut the edges of the plate. My mechanic wasn't happy with this set up so he used washers to bridge the holes & it works really well & holds firm. The ATE unit my mechanic received was for a different vehicle the supplier made a mistake. It has really made a huge difference to my braking, so much better. Dont be frightened of going for the Brazilian, just be prepared to make a slight adjustment.

Are there any other modifications required to fit and get the Brazil brake servo working? I noticed the required modification of the pattern in the mounting plate. Maybe replacing the mounting plate by a bigger one to fit the larger pattern would be recommended.
Are there any other mods required? How about the original push rod of an 1971 early bay w/ brake servo? Does it fit?

Any pictures of successful brake servo replacements are welcome, too.

Thanks,
Olaf

I've just had a Brazilian servo done on my 1970, but was unable to take photos.

My mechanic fabricated a bracket which was welded on and lengthened the push rod. The Brazilian servo is slightly smaller so doesn't foul the handbrake cable. He prefers it to his OG one as it got a bit complicated to fit.

I had a Brazilian one fitted to my original beam, now transferred to my CE Weedeater which again needed the mounting bracket fettling. I paid around £80 for it from Heritage, which is a damn sight cheaper than £300+ foe the ATE one. :D

Has anyone got a picture or drawing of the re pipe for a Brazilian servo converstion ,would be gratefull

I had this issue. The servo for a 71 is slighter smaller (10mmish) believe it or not. I ended up buying 3 used ones and none fitted. They were all ATE but the one I needed had another number on the side -70 I think. Anyway I explained this to a breakers up north and they found one, took a picture side by side with a 70 servo and was astonished as me that they were a different size. I'm sure I still have the pictures somewhere if needed.

Whilst it was a pain finding it I would always try to source an original instead of a repro. Works and fits like a glove.

If anyone wants pics let me know.

Fred
