buddy seat? anyone use it for a kids bed?

Saw this on the samba from the original campmobile brochure

take it this is just a standard buddy seat?

Anyone used it like this? could suit my 3 year old whilst my long term search/build for the roof bed takes place:

could this be the reason the back of the seat is stuck on with poppers? to enable it to be removed and give more room on the seat ?
