I've got an EMPI carb on my 1600 '71. It appears to be weeping fuel and runs like a bag of. Is it worth repairing or should I buy an old Solex and if so, which one?

Thanks in advance.

Depends how flush you are feeling - EMPI stuff is rubbish

If you want to keep it totally standard just swap the carb for a new Solex Pict34

I've got a solex 34 pict 3 I took off my old engine. Throttle bushes were changed and I cleaned and rebuilt it a few years ago, ran really well. Been stood for about 18 months now. Only thing with it is one stud thread stripped when it was taken off, should be an easy fix but I haven't got around to doing it yet. PM me if you're interested

Disconnect the fuel hose, take the air filter off, pull the throttle return spring off and take the top of the carb off. Blow in the fuel inlet while working the brass valve/nut with your finger. If you can always blow through it, you need a new float valve. If pushing on the little button stops flow, you're looking at throttle spindle bushes. They're a bit more of a job to replace, but still do-able. Sure, EMPI carbs are known for being poorly made, but there's still a difference between one made on a Tuesday morning and on a Friday afternoon. It may well be fine, just needs a bit of a service.

Cool. I'm gonna give the Happystamps method a go before I commit to changing. It'll give me some fiddling practice before I give in and cry and ask for more help and then get someone else to do it.
