I can't weld, so i sent it to my local VW specialist..

how much damage was behind the front panel? did the A pillar survive?

Yes it survived, but needed pushing back a little bit as it was slightly bent inwards (un-noticeable really, just made the door fit a bit nicer) inner deformation panel was lightly damaged but again this was bent back. Other damage was a bent dashboard, due to the handbrake mount being fixed to the air box, which was also pushed back.. That's about it... Bloody lucky my van wasn't lowered at the time, else the passenger would o had a fece full of pick up truck!
