Hi there, as a newbie here i'm hoping to tap into the wealth of knowledge u guys have. i'm renovating a 1970 camper and the first job is some major chassis repairs. the rails have some rot and the front cross member will need replacing as well as the outriggers.
I was wondering where to start first obviously i cant hack the whole lot out in one go
Also what about support as i am concerned about sagging, where is best to support ?

Any suggestions you have would be great...thanks

Hi mate ..

first take a deep breath ..
secondly what ever you expect to find wants doing .... double it!
thirdly .. Look at all the repairs you can in the gallery section, to see how peeps have gone about it ..

show us some pics to see how bad it is .. it may be better to remove floor to get the repairs done properly ..

.. most importantly .. do it right first time .. I think we have all patched for MOT and regretted it 18 month later .. done properly will last a hell of a long time ..

I have loads of pics from when i did mine if you want any ref .. let us know and I'll point you to my photobucket ..

Good luck with it and keep us updated ..

I'll second that. Have a good sift thru the gallery as there are some really good selections of pics of chassis rebuilds. I am in the middle of replacing my front crossmember at the moment, together with chassis rail repairs and outriggers. Be prepared to remove some floor for access, especially if you need to replace the crossmember tophats. Top tip: get one of those thin diamond cutting discs for your grinder. They last for ages and cut thru metal clean and straight.

Thanks for your replies guys, really appreciate it! :D
Like you say i've had a quick look through the forum and found some really helpful pics and advise, found a thread done by BayTripper who has done a fantastic job on his chassis repairs although he opted to roll his bay which i was hoping to avoid doing. Will continue to look through cus i guess ive only just scratched the surface of what this forum has to offer :) Gonna be off work for a few days this week and can't wait to get stuck in!. What are your guys thoughts on grit/sand blasting the underside rather than grinding?
