Please excuse the daft question, but as a new owner, just want to check I'm doing this right.

Is there any special technique to checking the oil ? Engine off with oil warmed up ?

Thanks !

Level ground and cold engine - I usually have mine in the middle between the top and bottom marks on the dip stick

Preferably as close to the top mark without overfilling, as the oil helps with engine cooling. Bearing in mind on a stock engine there's only 2.5litres when full (and approx. 1.5l on the lower mark) and it works pretty hard, you want as much in there as you can.

When your engine is cold, the oil level can be up to the top mark, do not overfill it. If you check oil levels when hot, then it should be a little less on the stick, somewhere above halfway between the two marks. When it's cold, the oil will have mostly drained to the bottom hence the top mark, but when it's warm or hot, you are never sure how much has drained from the motor since it stopped running. It's not really to do with the temperatures but it's a good guide. Theoretically you could start the motor and turn it off within seconds and it would still be cold, but the oil will have pumped all over the motor again and take a good while to all drain off.

Ozziedog,,,,, that's my take on it
