Commutator Colour?

Been doing some Reading, haynes says the commutator shouldn't show serious signs of discolouration, looking at mine, where the brushes are it's black, I assume this should be copper coloured and therefore this is the root of my problem maybe?

Anyone know if this is the case?

Next question, has anyone fitted or refitted the dynamo/ alternator them selves? How long would it take to pull the engine out and fit?

they will discolour but the contact area should be fairly bright...get a fibreglass pen and clean the commutator by just spinning the dynamo it shouldnt take too long at all to clean
