Hi,

Looking for an ideally original Continental double bed, I’d also be more than happy with one of Faux’s old kits too.

I’m happy to source the wood panels and upholstery if required, the hardware is the tricky bit.

I’m aware NLA do them but they’re a little different to the original.

Anyone got one they hardly use and would like to sell on?

I became aware several years ago, that most of the non-British specification, pre-1974 VW Type 2's, with the front-hinged elevating roofs, were fitted with a single-berth, folding-cot style stretcher bunk, whereas the RHD 1973 VW Type 2 Westfalia Continental for the UK market, had the solid plywood, two-berth, children's double-bed (or single-berth bed for one adult like me, of significantly less than the 80 kg maximum load!). This is why I created the above drawing.

In September 1998, I came across a French registered, LHD 1973 VW Type 2 Westfalia Helsinki for the mainland European market, which apart from having a single-berth, folding-cot style stretcher bunk for the elevating roof, was a mirror image of my RHD 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Westfalia Continental.

From time to time, various pre-1974 VW Type 2 Westfalia motor-caravan & campervan (they are NOT the same!) owners have asked about retro-fitting the post-1973, plywood-based, two-berth double bed as used in the longer rear-hinged elevating roof [not a practical option!], and there has been at least one British company that made full or partial kits that closely mimic the RHD 1973 VW Type 2 Westfalia Continental's elevating-roof bed, which should be documented on The Samba forum somewhere.

If you are still looking for one. NLA VW do a kit which is similar to the original continental roof bed but the pillow section is detachable rather than being hinged. I have one in my early westy and it is a great bit of kit. My 2 girls love it.

I have recently found the photocopy of a 1973 VW Type 2 Westfalia Continental owner's handbook, that someone sent to be several years ago. I shall scan it at my local public library and send the digital scans to Everett Barnes at The Samba, who will hopefully post them in the VW Type 2 manuals' archive.
