Is it a bad idea on a 69 front drum to replace with later spindle 71 small five stud disks then used with an adapter back to wide 5 wheel studs. I know it will add width to wheels, is it safe ? It should work out cheaper.

We're just discussing a disc upgrade in this thread

Should be safe I can't see why not, but as you say it adds to the width, what price have worked it out to convert this way?

Would you need to change spindles to go to narrow 5 discs? Then the rotors, calipers discs etc, and then the cost of wide 5 adapters
