Now then, as I know EarlyBay to be full of friendly folk, I figured I can get away with asking this question on here....... :)

I'm looking for a new project now that my Bus is complete and my GF is suggesting that we tackle a Beetle. Now I'm pretty clueless when it comes down to these wee beasties so I was wondering whether you lot could point me in the right direction. Just like Bays there are lots of opinions out there as to which is the best year to own. I know that cars like Ovals and Splits are right up there on the desirable list but I'm putting these to one side at the moment.

So, the question to you guys is, what year of Beetle would you go for?

Thanks folks

Ian

really depends on your budget, if money was no object it would be a Hebmuller or early Karmann cab. on mid budget a nice oval and on the cheap a bigwindow 67 as it has a lot of one year only parts and was the last year of the slopers and its 12V.

I know very little on the beetle front, but enough to know a '67 is cool and affordable 8)

aint dat du truth! 8)

(sorry been watching the wire and feeling a bit street today! )

My first car was a 1303 so I love em, it drove like a modern car. but they rust badly!

dont worry about whats cool just get what you like, but as with a bay I wouldent touch any thing with rust.

Good luck.

Thanks fellas,

To be honest your comments have done nothing but prove how little I know about all the various models and years

I'm off to look at a 1972 this afternoon to start getting my eye in. It's not the best looking model and needs some work but it's very affordable.

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

i love the 67 1yo also.. best of the pre 67 12v etc.. as already said above..

We thought about getting an Oval, but we are well happy with the one we ended up with :D

Back on the road soon :)

What do you plan to 'do' to the bug - as (in my opinion) various model years look better in different styles...

Having said that I'd go for a 58-60, or a US spec 67 :)

I would get a type 3 all day long having owned one now. They rae a superior drive than beetles and give you that bit extra warm feeling when nobody can work out what you are driving! I usually get "is that an old golf mate?" spose it is in a way
