I'd like to fit my 68 (67, so v early) with discs.
CSP hugely expensive, but complete.
Or fit 'original' type. Am I correct in thinking there are 2 options for 'original'
A type that were fitted for only a few years - (70-72?) and the type fitted thereafter.
Any reason to chose one over the other - do both have a servo, and is a servo really needed, if one is used to the drum brake effort etc.
Also, fitting 'original' options mean losing the old style wheels (205) - is that correct? Can you get adapters, or will I have to change the rears in order to get matching wheels.
I believe one of the advantages of the CSP stuff is that they do a set to fit earlier wheels?

Yes you would be better to fit a servo but its not essential and yes you would lose the wide five wheels, you could use adapters to take your 5x112 to 5x205. If your worried about track red9 can make slimline stainless steel adapters to any pattern you wish.

The difference between <71 calipers and >72 and later calipers is the thickness of the brake pads, one being 19mm and the other 15mm. Both are readily available now. I'm not sure about refurb kits i think the pots are the same size.

FBI sell complete bolt on refurbed late bay calipers/spindle/disc units for around £200 a pair.

if you know someone breaking a latebay it may be even cheaper, but you wouldnt be sure the brakes were mechanically safe and youd have to do the refurb yourself, depends how handy you are.

To convert to discs all you need is the steering knuckles from a late bay along with hubs, calipers and discs. Post 73 is easier as they use Girling calipers which are easy to refurbish. This gives a late type hubs and wheels. As for the rears just replace the back plates, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, hubs and drums to take the later wheels. If your feeling really clever use type 25 back plates and shoes which will give you automatic adjusters on the rear. A servo is not essential as the set up works fine. We converted a '68 a few weeks ago and the difference is amazing. The downside is you will loose the wide 5 wheels but adapters may overcome that.

Cool - so pretty easy to do/get the parts without having to spend almost £800 on CSP stuff. Thats what I wanted to hear!

There's a company out there supplying modern front brakes from a VW Passat or Audi A6 (5x112 PCD) which is much cheaper than CSP - I'll try to find the info...

;)

I have late 5x112 wheels on my '68 bus. TBH it makes little difference, paint 'em white, get some half decent caps and some stainless beauty rings they'll look fine. The post '73 brake setup is great, parts are significantly cheaper, they were used on T25s up to '91.:D The power from the brakes is great, I can lock all four wheels and smoke tyres on my bus if I stamp hard enough.

I'd like to fir W5 wheels on my early bay was considering using adapters although had a T3 years ago and the alloy adapter cracked and the wheel came of fortunatley only going slowly at the time!!!!

Is anyone using adapters for later style to W5 steyle wheels????
