It seems to me that most people seem to have a lot of money to spend on a bay these days (and then a lot of money to do unnecessary modifications to it too!...fancy lowering...wheels etc). Is here anyone still out there that runs a bus on a budget. By that I mean keeping them standard, and just using them...with minumum spend? How can there be so many people with 10k or similar to spend on a bay....where the hell do they get that kind of money?...it puzzzles me :?

Just wondering

I suppose its as simple as how much disposable income you have.

We budgeted for buying and restoring the van as it was something we really wanted to do, however the resto went about 5k over budget which was mainly due to me getting carried away and changing more than what was originally planned for

Hi Toad I had to downsize the house sell my 1968 Triumph Bonny, ride a push bike to work or walk if it snows my Wife has a Fiat 5oo she wont walk, in order to have a nice rust free stock 44 year old Bay. only problem now is I have to support my 19 year old Daughter through University that was not part of the plan.

This is a bit of an odd one really as my bus was done on a budget in my eyes, i have no loan and took the gamble to buy it from pictures for a bargain price, though it has had loads of mods. I have managed to do it by buying and selling, restoring etc. More like loads of hours put in than money.

I keep it on the road on a budget, generally it costs me £300 a year, including servicing, MOT and insurance but I do like to treat it to some none essential treats when I can.

10K? That's a weekend's earnings for my *******. Unless they bring in 2 grand a night, I set the dogs on them. Ha Ha.

To be honest the whole market is hard to read , I see Ad's on here that I can't believe (both ways - seem too high/seem too low) all running alongside each other :msn4: .

But £135K for a Samba is somewhat ludicrous I would admit......

My Van owes me about 10-11K. And at a guess, thats what its worth.
My little story.
Baught a 74 Devon for 500 pounds on 2004.
Kept it for about 4 years doing it up through the winter and running it through the summer.
Was a rusty UK model. It owed me about 4k by the time i sold it. Thats a grand a year (every spare penny i could save).

2008 I lost my nan (lost my grandad in 92) and was left 4k in inherritance.
Sold my 74 for 3600 pounds (got told off by missus for making a loss :? ). Found the Van i have now and paid 4k For it. And put most of the rest of the money (3k)straight into my resto.
Other 600 went on stuff for my missus and daughter.
More recently lost my other nan and grandad (within a year of eachother) and inherrited another 4.5k.
Put another 3-3.5k into my van.
10k done.

My family dont realy see the possitives of me spending all this money on a VW Bus but then i am the Black sheep.
My sister who got exactly the same money payed off her depts, baught all new white goods for her kichen and a 51 plate Zafira  .
Yet im the one who makes bad dessisions.
Im skint again now  but i do have this VVVVVVVVV

looks pretty good to me lol

i do all my own repairs servicing and bodywork so ive no big garage bills i think of it as eating an elephant..... a little bit at a time....but it does come down to disposable income if you want to start modifying or restoring ...

The bus owes me nothing but then I have had it for rather a long time. Get a lot of puzzled looks when replying to the question "when was it restored" with "its not restored"

I guess a lot comes down to what you want to use your bus for combined with a realistic assessment of what skills you can use and the choices you make about what you spend your disposal income on - although having spent £50 on a ticket to watch Spurs play yesterday, I'm back questioning my own sanity.

I had every intention of only spending x' amount on my project when I started which was funded by the sale of my last bus, just to get it the way I wanted, but it ended up costing more but apart from the most recent episode of loose bolts I can justify most of the decisions I made. But for what we want to use it for as a family in the form of holidays and weekends away it will more than pay for itself in comparison with other holiday costs but to do this other things have to go and those are the choices I make

But I'm sure it is possible to run a bay on a whole range of budgets, even more so when you either have the skills or learn new ones and it never fails to amaze me how many 'favours' that are done via this site of passing parts on at cost or even given away free to those who need a part

The budget is what the bus requires. It`s not like you have a car payment that goes to the bank. Not all of us trick our busses out. Besides that just how can you possibly try to put valuation on passion. I drive one of my buses as transportation but I also have a "showbus" for lack of a better word. And having a passion is priceless. It is a lot of fun. It gives me a social life, with all the shows and events that take place centered on VW`s. Plus the camp outs and cruises. Once you begin the process you find the coin. Even my wife gets it now. I just don`t do anything illegal...any more. It really helps if you do your own work. I can tell you that after hanging around here just a little while that I want to lower my bus. This ***** contagious. Have fun.

I agree with the above. Some of my friends look at me like I'm mad when I say I've spent £x amount of my old bus. But then I don't understand how they can spend £100 every friday night in a club.
I think for me, owning a VW camper pays for itself 10 times over. With the cost of tax, insurance and any breakdowns on a modern car, a classic is the only option.

priceless....

I'm fed up with the - 'it'll look nice when it's finished', but I run mine on a budget and as others sell stuff to fund the bus bits, the respray I'm saving up for in seriouness, but the 97% OG paint still wins in my opinion, but a clean bus is a nice thing to see.....
