Can anyone recommend a decent dremel type tool and what do you use yours for?
I've just lent one off a mate to clean up my heads, i'm not polish and porting them just tidying off years of soot from the ports!. Anyway i thought great i'll get my own but was shocked at how pricey they are. The Dremel 300 was about £40 for the basic tool and a few accessories, and think the dremel 400 was around double this.
Are the cheaper branded tools just as good? Halfords sell for £25 (but they didn't have any in) and Argos sell a clarke version for £30. Am i just aswell paying the extra for a dremel or will a cheaper one be just as good?

Hi Froggy, I got mine from Woolworths and it does the job although I haven't given it any real hardcore use. But I expect it is like most things and you get what you pay for and prob the Dremmel will last longer but I have some other woolies tools and they have lasted well so you never know.
Sorry just realised this is a real fence sitting answer

Remember the old adage "the cheapest isn't always the best value"

got a couple at home one dremel and a cheapy no name off ebay for a tenner and both ok...My last dremel lasted no time at all to be honest and they werent at all helpfull, granted It was heavy useage on the 1303s heads....

the other way to go is a decent pendant drill (ex dentist or jewellers stock or similar) Helen has one for her jewelry, far supperior if you can get used to the flexi shaft, that was a Ebay bargain I think it was less than 30 notes....

B&Q do a line used to be called Performance or something?, i got a dremel type tool with box and about 100 different pieces, every head and sanding flap you could need for around £30. dunno if they still have it though

looks like they only do dremmel now

cheaper ones are fine, i found out that the performance range are made by 'black and decker' Keep your receipts, if it breaks you have a one year guarantee (statutory) take it back and get a new one

Went to B&Q today and didn't have any in stock :( , asked when they might be having some more in but might aswell asked for the moon, will check back in a few days

Bought a black and decker one quite a few years ago got it at Argos 1/2 price :D

Only trouble was a few years light usage the gears broke. Great tool while it worked.
My dad gave me one a while ago non varieable speed and its crap.

Just thought what i wrote is no help at all. :D
