there is no clearance between the pulley and generator it has been worn away
the pulley is grinding in to the end a good 5 mm,put a washer behind to get me home and that is how half its thickness....

is there any reason for this the shaft in the Genny has no back to forward movement

hi rich.is it possible the woodruff key has not been fitted? if the key is not in place, the pulley can then spin on the dynamo shaft, thus causing the damage you have. i would think if you can refit a woodruff key and use washers or a spacer behind the pulley(this must be slightly smaller than the dynamo shaft,so the shaft can still spin when its all tight) to pack it back out, you should be fine. steve.

Nah thats the wrong slot fella the woodruff slot is on the centre beneath that dome...

Was thinking of a pic of the rear of the pulley

To be honest it can only be a few things, is the damage to the dynamo all round that centre or concentrated to a portion?

the pulleys looking right but the front plate should shed light on that

if the woodruff is too small you may get a rotational lock but force the pulley right back against the dynamo (that said it shouldnt be possible)

the belts too tight and the bearings worn pulling the axle off centre (any lateral movement)

the axles bent

more pics fella

the key is there, and the damage is to the center,
ill get some pics of the back and pulleys when i get it out tommorow, the pullyes have groves cutting into the holes where they line up :?
hi steve,and thanks

thanks Araon.

ps
it was referbed, only done about 100 miles with it,

If you go alternator you have to change the stand & posibly the fuel pump because of the larger diameter of the motor

do i go dynamo or alternator to replace the shagged one :?:

is it beyond repair then? i went alternator last year.got a kit from vw heritage. was a bit of a pain in the arse, but got there in the end.as already said, looks like you will need to change the fuel pump for clearance. i also had to make a carb spacer to lift the carb up to clear the alternator. get some more pics of the damage up. is the shaft chewed up, and does the shaft turn ok?

As I understood it it was the ally case that was damaged?

if so then pull the armature out thoroughly clean the whole beast and get rid of any possible trace of metal swarf/powder and reassemble, confirm the fit of pulley to dynamo and away you go....

If it was refurbed, usually they will repair it under warranty or good will, especially as you've only done 100 miles?

didnt get time tonight to get it out,
