Hi guys ..

Theres a strange rumble coming from my dynamo .. it has just started ..

I've not investigated any further yet, but was wondering ..

A.Is it best to replace with a new unit from heritage or someone else, cos some people have told me they can be a bit ropey ..

b.Is there anywhere i can get one recoditioned?

c. Should I take it to bits and have a look myself!

Theres one for sale on fleabay .. going cheap cos it won't charge .. I could rob it of parts ..

Cheers

Hilly

PS .. no my fan belt wasn't too tight .. i don't think? :?

It all rather depends on whether or not you want to get your hands dirty!
You can buy replacement bushes and bearings for them, but it's not really a straightforward job and you do need a bit of know-how.

From the sounds of it your bearings are on the way out - you could try spraying some (sprayable) grease inside at either end, although to be honest this would only be a very temporary fix, although it would quieten it down a bit.

Is it a low rumbling sound? (bearings) - or is it possible that something has fallen inside the dynamo? Have you checked the bushes? Press down on the bushes while the dynamo is spinning (be careful!) and see if the noise changes - if so, new bushes can be purchased for less than a tenner...

I'd get a new one, this is an important part of your engine's cooling system and is one area where saving a couple of quid now could cost you dear later!!

You could always upgrade to an alternator setup instead - if you've got the $$$'s!!
Good luck!

;)

The one on flea bay may be OK with something simple like stuck brushes on just needs polarising. Check it is the dynamo making the noise by taking the belt off and spinning it up with a drill.

Can I just take the belt off and run the engine briefly to see if the noise stops... or is that not advisable ..

Where would I get bearings from?

Cheers

look in your yellow pages or yell.com for auto electricians and they should be able to get the bearings from their suppliers..(cargo are the usual suppliers i can think of for automotive electrical bearings etc)

can't think of the part number at the mo.or find it

here is a link to their site

Yes you can run the engine without a fan for a brief period. Do it from cold and you have plenty of time. If it is the dynamo, then just remove the belt, lock the end of the shaft in a drill chuck and spin it up, it will soon be apparent if the dynamo is the fault.

Thanks for the info guys ..

I removed the belt today and ran the dynamo up with a drill and it seemed ok at speed .. a little noisy as it slowed .. removed the brushes and they seemed fine .. armature a little worn but not too bad .. sprayed it with grease and put back together and it seems ok ..

I think im gonna just keep an eye on it and see how it goes .. it could have had something in it as the bottom brush cover is missing .. or it could just be cos it had been stood for a while ..

Thanks

Hilly

.. onto the next job ..
