Hi All

After the disaster with the engine I'm cracking on building the replacement up

this is my first engine build so massive learning curve !

Im using the Tom Wilson book as a guide/bible .

I've got the case joined together (finally) and am trying to set end play I've got loads of shims in various sizes ( thanks to mattp)
have measured, no DTI but using the feeler gauge tool , i can get it spot on without installing the oil seal 0.07mm and torqued to 200-220 ftlb or 270 ftlb , but as soon as i install the flywheel oil seal torque to 270 ftlb i get no movement at all ?

Clearly I'm doing something wrong or just being a div , but its starting to drive me mad and if i keep at it its going to cost me a fortune in oil seals !( fyi I've got an oil seal tool so there going in straight )

Please Help !!! I'm missing the whole summer , and its really depressing walking pass the van in mornings and having to take the car :(

Does the crank still turn freely?

From your description it sounds like the flywheel is bottoming out on the oil seal - which is odd. The only way that can happen is if the seal is not going in far enough or is too thick - unless there's something odd about the flywheel itself. Or is it just stiffness from the seal?

I prefer to check end play with a dial gauge and tap the crank each way with a mallet.

Hi
Yes its turning over nicely

Pictures of oil seal just incase you notice something odd

Will try borrow a DTI get a more accurate idea

Thanks

It could just be the camera angle but that seal looks to be a bit cocked - not far enough in at the top.

Hi

Thanks , think it was just my "Pro" camera work , I'm getting older and its starting to show :(

Anyways took it apart and back together a "few " times shouted swore pulled hair swapped shims , so there as to much end play swapped so there was none , swapped to the original ahhhhhhh !

but long story short got there, well 0.08 rather than 0.07 but close enough for me,

Thanks for help all as always

Cylinders and pistons next , and cc heads !

Expect more questions soon !

Thank you

Chico

( I drove it once ! , It Was Brilliant ! :D

then I broke It

:( ,

One day ill drive it again )

Lol

Cheers

How i dream of a garage , and tools organised in chests , a place for everything , maybe a work bench with vices and grinders …
Aaahhhh maybe one day …..

But living room engine builds are not to be sniff at ! theres less dust , the lighting is really good , its warm ,you can watch the telly/footie , tea and coffee are close at hand , and the beer fridge is close when you've completed the days task.

I am so in ore of some of the garage workshop setups some people have , id be happy with enough room for a walk in shed !!
