I had my van valued yesterday and a few points were picked up. Its a 71 model (Oct 70 build) running a 1641 twin choke weber. Firstly the tinware forward of the fan housing - Should there be one? Its the piece that fits between the fuel tank and fan housing - it looks like there should be one but I dont know. Without it is there any major issues as it must allow increased airflow over the top of the engine IMHO. Secondly, the fuel vent pipework that goes inside the air ducts above the engine compartment. There is absolutely no evidence of there ever being one. I know our friends 73 model has the pipes and they start in the vents and go down but thats all I know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

1. Yes thats a very important piece and will also hold two other pieces for the doghouse cooler tin.....
2. More details as to the origins of your bus, off hand I cant remember what year the evaporative capture came in? it was introduced into the states as part of their clean air laws (later into general production), two pipes left the tank and up the side vents into larger bulbs wher the vapour condensed then dropped to the engine bay and ran across the top of the engine lid where they were tee'd and fed to the carb.

That explains why the dogtin is not very supported!!!

My bus is a UK spec from new and was a Danbury conversion, any more details needed?

Hiya roxy,

The piece of tin you are missing is very important. Over here in the States that is a one-year only piece. It is specific to the 1971 dual port engine. In 1972 VW went to the larger 1700 pancake style engine in the USA and, of course, the tin changed accordingly. I'm not sure if that was the case in Great Britain. In any event, I'm thinking that you need to pay a visit to your local boneyard (breakers).

The M26 Evaporative Emissions Control System was standard equipment on all US VW vehicles starting in the 1970 production year. However, in 1970 and 1971 there were no emissions tubing running into the vent areas. That tubing started with the introduction of the 1700 engine in 1972. I'm guessing that would be the same in GB.

I don't think you have the vents that go up the rear corners. If you look through the half moon air vents if they where there you would see some metal pod thing welded onto the inside of the rear corners, with a metal pipe joined onto it and running down to the engine bay.Don't beleive any '71's had them though.

Get the gearbox tin if you can.But make sure it's the right shape one as a beetle one is similar but about an inch shorter and won't seal your engine bay.You can't buy new or repro ones anywhere depite what is listed in the usual suppliers, they will be the beetle ones.I know I bought one and plenty of people I know always get the beetle style ones. You need to find a decent second hand one somewhere. You can use a single port one from a 68-70 model year and cut out the hole for the dog house tin again a second hand item.

Have a try but I think all the over gearbox tin Mattp is selling is for a beetle, ghia or splitty which is the wrong one.The rest of the tin is good for an earlybay but the over gearbox tins you need where specific for 1971 earlybays.

Isnt mattp selling a load of engine tin on here at the moment?

He is but not willing to split at the moment. And then the post after yours says they are more beetle type.

I definately havent got any pipework / pods in my vents. I didnt think I needed them!!

I forgot to mention you can actually modify the beetle tin to fit.If you look at the one for the 1971 bus and compare it to the beetle type, they have literally just welded in a section onto the bus one.You could do the same if you don't mind a bit of cutting and welding.I might give it a go myself soon. There was someone on here who was makling the bit to weld on,just found it, it was 67 Bay who did make them before. http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16400" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .Maybe if there is enough demand he will make some more?
