Hi all,
What have people got in terms of firewall protection on the roof and rear wall of their engine bay? I've got a 1970 (or poss a 69) back from being welded and sprayed ready for the work I can do on it. I'd appreciate any ideas/ pics thanks.

I really like what tintintin has done with his under the '1970 tin top westy resto' thread:

but not sure if I can stretch to that. Incidentally, I had the same rear panels in my van but they were knackered and rotten at the bottom so have gone. Pics are just over halfway down this page:

Finally, I've consulted my Haynes manual but stil none the wiser...what's this pipe bit? (arrowed)

Thanks!

Please ...

Move the fuel filter out of the engine bay, or get some clips on the lines that attach to it.

:D

ahhh yes....good idea!!! Hadn't really given it much thought as that's how it was when I got it back...
What sort of clips do I need? And is the hot air feed supposed to be open like that?
(sorry - don't know much about engines...)

I normally place the filter just after the tank outlet, but it can be where it is. Any motor factors should sell fuel line clips, and you may as well change the lines whilst you are doing it ;)

You need another length of the black card hose to go from that hole in the tinware upto the inlet hole on the air filter. :)

Nice spot Clem, that is possibly one the worst positioned I have seen, also by placing it before the pump you protect the diaghram from grit and varnish and sludge..... plus that filter looks past its best anyway....

thanks guys...so I guess I need to do some work in there then.
I was thinking of getting new tubing for the air hoses go from the fan housing to the heat exchangers (have I got that right?) so will use that also for the airfilter.

Do you mean as in the pic below?
And for

- the red line - goes to the bottom pipe?

Isn't if before the pump on mine?
So essentially need some:
new tubing for airfilter/ heat exchanger pipes
replace the fuel line going from the filter to the pump
replace the braided pipe going from air filter to oil filler (?)
replace the filter and place it closer to the top as in the pic
get some clips for all of the piping
get a fire extinguisher !
Thanks

Heres a nice template to follow -

But I place the fuel filter under the van its self, where the fuel line exits the fuel tank, that way its right out of the engine bay ... I figure its less joins in the bay and away from electrics?

You should replace all the hoses, from carb to fuel pump, from fuel pump to the hard line that comes through the side of the fanshroud, and the line that runs from the tank to that hard line. Itll be a tenner, tops, to do the lot, and you'll know its safe!

Fire extinguisher? Get on the Firetec Group Buy thread, its a dear job, but peace of mind? Priceless!

Cheers Clem - that's the sort of pic I needed to see! How easu would it be to clean up my engine with it in the bay? Pretty tricky I'd guess and it would mess up my nice new paintwork?
Cheers
