I have just received a letter from my insurance company saying they require a list of all the vans modifications to put on to their records. The only one problem I have is that the engine is now not the original one but a bigger unit and I need to tell them the engine number. as far as I know it usually is under the firing order stamp on the alternator pedestal, but it's not there! Any ideas?

Usually as you say the engine number is on crankase below generator pedestal .It's possible a type 3 case has been used and the engine number is on top case where the two halfs of case join. Type 3 oil dipsticks go direct into the sump as against type 1 / 2 that go into case itself. Hope this info is helpfull to you.

I've had my camper 5 years now (US Import)
The engine it came with was a US Recon unit and had no number.
It's quite normal for these engines to have the original numbers "ground" away
When sold as re-manufactured units.......

In fact, I've just took a look at my logbook and the engine number is blank :)

Never been an issue with my insurers, I'd have another word tbh.
