I want to tidy up the tin wear and gereally have a poke about............how is it done and in what order?? And will I need any new parts to refit? Also what easy jobs are worth doing whilst its out?

Don't forget the throttle cable. :D
Takes about an hour to do without rushing, the hardest/awkward bit is the two top bolts.

step by step my way
1 jack up rear aand put on stands
2remove rear bumper and valance
3remove air cleaner
4remove battery, disconect wires make note were they go
5disconect throttle cable
6undo top starter nut (behind fan housing) and l/h top nut(if single port case or bolt from underneath later if twinport)
7from underside clamp fuel hose and disconect
8undo heater cables,remove pipes
9suport gearbox,then undo 2 lower nuts
10jack up engine,undo engine mountings,when free/clear pull engine out.
easy half hour if nowt siezed!my record for removing beetle engine(on lift)10 mins.take your time and be patiant, note were everything goes and you will be ok good luck

Check, double check and then replace your fuel lines :)

things to change/check

clutch bearing
fuel lines/filter
fuel filler neck pipe/and breathers
check drive shaft boots/bearings easy with it out
any oil seal
check valve clearance easy when out
take tin wear off give a good clean

put the engine on a couple of skateboards bloody easy to move about mate

cheers rich

good work fellas

I think i have an oil seal gone as clutch slips when i come off the motorway after a long run, may be worth changine clutch too, otherwise its fine.........Done fuel lines, need to replace split inner CV boot, valves ect done on the rollers back in the summer, want to check the fuel tank and generally clean up the engine bay.

Still not 100percent confident, but didnt know the bastard of a starter motor bolt needed undoing  that was c*%t last time
