....just got back into the country to find the bugs' main bearing oil seal leak was a cracked case (behind flywheel near No.3) .....as the other half said "very lucky you happened to have a spare one in the dining room"..refering to the 90.5mm engine case that has been sat around for the last year

how many man hours would it take a engine builder to strip the old engine and re-build on another case?

Took me about 12 to 14 hours to fully strip n rebuild a 1600cc sp motor. Was my 1st. Quite enjoyed it actualy

Speak to Richard at Airspeed UK, he isn't that far away from you.

Most parts came from ssp, bearings, oil pump etc.
The heads and cam (both totaly standard) came from a race engine builder who used to advertise in Volksworld from Leister. 2 Fully rebuilt (valves, guids and seats) genuine old heads and a brand new cam was 200 quid.
The whole build was around the 450 mark.

Hiya mjk,

So, basically, you just want to change out the case. Correct? All the innards, jugs and heads from the old to the new?

I don't think a reputable builder (a guy who stands behind his work) is just going to do a simple change out like that. I'm guessing he's going to want to look at everything pretty closely, measure for spec, do some machining, and possibly replace some items.

I agree with the post above that the only way to get a good idea of that sort of cost is to talk to the rebuilders directly. Who knows? You may find a guy who will simply do the change over, charge you a pittance, and not guarantee his work. If you're in a money crisis that may be an alternative for you. But I'm thinking you'll need to talk it over with some rebuilders to get a good idea of which route you may want to take.
