Ok, so I'm feeling good today! Not only did I manage to replace the battery in my lexus key (I know, I'm a technical wizard) but also and more importantly, I've sorted out the ignition and it's no longer jamming (bob Marley style).

So, next on the list is the charging problem and then the brake lights.

So, I spoke to Gary at cool campers today, he is a great guy you know? He tells me that I have a dynamo and external regulator, which on looking at it, I have. A quick tip here never take the seller for granted, he told me it was an alternator, not sure he knew the difference but then again nor did I till today. Anyway enough waffling!

So, Gary told me to check the brushes which I have and try look perfick to me! So, any ideas on the nex step of diagnosing the generator problem, how much is a regulator and where can I get one (fast peferably, I'm in Winchester hants) secondly, on the commutator (I think that's what it's called) how much scoring is too much?

Any other advice, offers of help to come and help are more than appreciated! Jack daniels and diet coke can be offered in payment!

Thanks

Hi Fella, Gary is indeed a good guy. My generator light came on, so i changed the brushes as its early to do and quite cheap, then i replaced the Regulator, this is what rectified my fault. I got them both from JK, the new Regs wiring is different from original and the instructions dont help  There is always scoring on the Com, but you can tell if its shot, and seeing as ur brushes arnt worn away you should be ok.

Hi sean
I found this helpful when trying to diagnose problems with the dynamo/charging

http://www.vw-resource.com/generator.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

turned out mine needed polarizing :D ....Dave

Thanks just, I will bare in mind once I've checked.

Dave- thanks for that website, I think it's going to be a great help, will get my voltmeter out tomorrow and start the testing!

Cheers guys,

sean

Ok, for anyone who read my post about bringing betty back on Friday, here's an update ,so the neighbour who had a go when we brought betty back on Friday came over today with two bottles of wine and an apology, so that's all gooooood now!

Also, think I have managed to figure the brake light problem (they don't work) I've traced the wire from te brake lights to the master cylinder and it all looked ok. So I traced the wire back into the cabin, disconnected from it's connection and carried out a circuit test and lo and behold there was no power when the brake is engages, so I believe it's the pressure switch in the mastercylinder

before replacing and having to bleed the brakes I want to double check by disconnecting te wires to the maste cylinder and carrying out a circuit test between. So the question now is, which wire do I test? I have a dual type master cyclinder with three wires leading in and three leading out, anyone got any ideas on circuit testing this?

Thanks
sean

Yeah straight up jonny! In actual fact I'm just about to my self a nice big glass of White!

Slowly getting closer to solving the issues with the van, so hopefully be all good for the weekend so happy days!

On top of it all, ordered some bits from just kampers today only to find out when they sent me a conformation email that I drive past their shop almost everyday to and from work and my girlfriend and co owner of betty, works only a few miles away. This all seems to be coming together quite nicely!
