Ok, first of all i've been hearing some strange noises in my van recently
1st noise is like a click every time i press my brakes on, appears to be coming from my Driver side wheel (RHD) could this be a the pads on the disk? or something totally different. It only happens when the van is moving, and my brakes are acting fine, just wondering what the sound it

2nd Is a bit more bizarre. When i press my clutch when rolling down a hill (yes, i know its naughty but i always cost home.. Carbon footprint  ) and i put it in gear one (clutch still down) A Whirring noise comes from my gearbox, Sounds like a whirring engine when you drop a gear, but it is definitely not that, as the van does not slow down.. What could this be?

What are your opinions on this wheel arch, Recently some of the underseal has flaked off, revealing these patches (all on the Drivers side arch)

First, here is what is underneath the flakes...

Looks a bit nasty

And here is what flaked off..

And finally, is this thing in the middle of my underside a big ugly belly pan? because i always thought belly pans went all the way to the edge of the underside..

Apologies for the bad picture

Thanks in advance

That is indeed a belly pan you then have further side pans to take it to the sills (though not on yours)

1st have you been working on your brakes recently? if it only occurs when in transit (forwards/reverse?), suspecting a little movement in the pads/anti rattle plates etc....or worst case the fixings to the steering knuckle are loose..

2nd wouldnt have thought the noise is from the gearbox unless the clutch isnt fully disengaging..... If coasting does the noise appear as soon as 1st is selected?

thats looking a little like filler you have there but not awfully clear its in your mitts what are you thinking?

I don't have the foggiest why filler would be in my arches :? I'll have to re paint the insides..

The brake noise happens in either direction, and does not affect the braking, Just happens once when i press the brakes.. I did have the pads changed in december

The whining noise happens pretty much as soon as i put it in 1st, but doesn't appear to affect the engine in any way.. kind of gets a bit more whiney, like an engine would.. I had my window open to have a listen earlier, but still couldn't decipher what exactly is making the noise

What should i do about the belly pan!? As i am unsure as to what is under there, Although my chassis rails were replaced in '89 and appear to be rock solid.. Should i see about getting it removed?

Thanks :D

its only in 1st, not in any other gear feintly in the background i.e. not as noisey in 2nd quieter again in 3rd etc...

Yep only in 1st, doesn't appear to happen in 2nd or 3rd :?

whipp the wheel off and check the caliper retaining springs. one may have broken or isnt seated correctly as you said the pads were changed recently it may have slipped and be sitting against the pad? i wouldnt touch the belly pan if youve have already repaired the chassis sections? The middle one is normally bolted on so you can remove it and screw it back on.

Check the drain holes in the pan and make sure they are clear, you maybe able to put a flash light under one and look in. Or if you cant screw it off then hit the pan a good hard thump in the middle and listen for falling material as you whack it. If there is its a good sign of rust and some problems. I always do this with a van with belly pans if you cant see into or take them off.

Loose the belly pans, period. They are probably covering some serious rot. If you are lucky then all is well. Just coat everything in waxoyl and you should be OK.

Thanks for the tips guys.. Im confident that the belly pan shouldn't be hiding anything as i have owned the van over 2 years and all of the chassis is solid.. But better safe than sorry, so i'll look into it with a torch. The whole van had a full resto in '89 and has been properly looked after ever since (plus it has been stored for several years)..

clutch noise will be either worn release bearing or one of the clips has come loose from the bearing. whip the motor out and have a check!

I managed to sneak my camera between the belly pan and the floor to see what it looked like, Heres what i saw

Not too bad i reckon, but the floor of the belly pan looked like this through a hole..

Hmm.. at least the chassis looks good, just needs a good ol' coat of waxoyl.. maybe a scrape with wire wool.. Guess not all belly pans are covering up nasty rot :D

not too bad?

bloody brilliant more like! the belly pan will be mudded or dusty that all. all looks sweet to me

looks like the pans did their job 8) i'd be happy if i was you :D

Relieved is probably the best word to describe my mood , i'll sneak some waxoyl in there through the gap, give it a good covering..

guess there's no need to take the belly pan off, it's doing its job bloody well i'd say, dry as a bone up there :D

There are some weld patches on the belly pan, they must of had a good look in there during its resto in '89 or '98 8)

after i got my van i noticed if i hit the bellypan with a mallet i could hear something that seemed like rust dropping down, started poking and a hole developed in the pan, stuck the camera in the hole and found it to be solid covered in waxoil was very relieved and the noise when hitting with the mallet was mud and sand that had got in there rotting the pan from the inside out - very relieved

Guess we're the lucky ones, unlike the van in the e-bay thread..

I think they should look under there for the MOT... make sure everything is ship shape
