Hi all,

Replacing the vent on my Dormobile top today and found the roof in pretty poor condition. I have started sanding with 80 grit, but there are some big chunks missing as below. What's the best way to fill these, and what should I do to paint afterwards?

Hi Dave,
Halfords do a 'Davids fibre glass kit' that I used on my pop top for big reapis. The fibres gives the strength but if its just light damage & cosmetic, then just the glass mixture will improve it.If its not that deep,I'd use body filler - but try and get flexible/non crack type due to the movement in the pop top. you can sand it back, course at first working to finer and paint it once you are happy with the finish. looks like the gel coat is damaged from the pics,so might be able to get away with just body filler.

Check out my How 2 to see if there is anything to help in there.....

Cheers Rob. Looks like it is just the gelcoat, so I might try ordinary filler. Probably just paint it as that seems easier than re-gelcoating.

Hi Dave, i take it from the photos that its in the recesses where the roof vents fit. If it was mine i would grind off the loose gelcoat then sand it reasonably smooth and paint it with gelcoat with a wax additive, this will make it water proof. If you need to know anymore pm me, Where abouts are you if you are close i could come and have a look.

Hi Steve,

Yes, it's the recesses as you say. I have bought some plastic padding gelcoat filler which I am hoping will do the job. I'll try and grind it back a bit so that nothing is loose. Not sure how far to sand back the rest of the crazing/cracks as I am worried that the coating may be pretty thin by the end, so I might just try a light skim of filler over these once the gelcoat filler is done. I'm over in Surrey a way away, but thanks for your offer!

Dave
