Hi everyone, Almost finished the welding on the bus, and time has come to tackle the cab doors :? ! Has anyone got any tips or advise to get a good job done on this, or is there a 'How to' lurking on the net somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Regards, Si

Depending how it's rotten , you cut across the skin and drill out the skin edge spot welds and peel off the affected area, then replace with a skin of dubious thickness, and mind to bond/ seal the inner supports to reduce distortion.
I did one years back, and also needed to replace the inner frames etc, after then it's much easier to bin rotten doors and fit OG imports.

Thanks for the reply Clem, I have already tried to repair the skin with the correct thickness steel and all went well upto the last 4-5 inches of welding and then the skin just buckled in. I have just bought a new skin and it's very thin but the shape and quality of the pressing is excellent. After some research I am leaning towards bonding the panel on and just welding across the two small parts at the top? Any comments are welcome.

Regards, Si

It's the cross panel weld that will distort and of course will require filling so there is little chance to avoid it , ive seen panels spot welded across but then the filler cracks from door slamming .

try Soudal Fixall - it's a good polyurethane based adhesive. I've used it for fixing side body panels and it is a good as the stuff costing ten times as much.

Hi BJ1, Thanks for the tip I will look into it. Do you work in a bodyshop by any chance - was hoping to get some insiders tips?

I drilled all the spot welds out blasted them.

I know this isn't goin to help now but normaly when your rebuilding any sort of car or bus you build it around the doors so they will fit so your goin to have loads of fun to make them fit now This is how I build cars at work when Im doin complete full resto work

Hi D@VEY, great work there. I only wish my van had been that solid at the start  .

Hi Rob, Thanks for the advise. I am still using the original doors and hope that the new skins will fit with a little 'dollying'. I wish I had your facilities and experience though, looking at that fantastic work you do on the Jags. I want to give the adhesive route a try though, is there anything you would recommend in this situation?

Regards, Si
