Hi Yall
Going to fit an electric screen wash pump this weekend (see photo) need to know any pitfalls, ie where do i fit the motor above or below the water bottle, do i need a non return valve, do i disconnect the tube from the back of the original switch etc etc, or anything else i need to know

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks Vinvan

There's a nice guide that someone put together on here - a bit of searching will surely dig it up. You basically do away with the hoses to the switch, cut the back of it off and carefully screw a push-to-make microswitch into the hole youve just made. I took my cut switch to Maplin and they had one for a couple of quid that fitted. The push button 'straw' then needs to be cut down to just the right length that it activates the microswitch. Might need a little trial and error to get it right - just don't cut too much off! Run some power cables from the fusebox to the switch and pump with suitably sized cable.

You want to mount the pump so that the suction side is lower than the outlet of the water bottle. Personally, I wouldn't bother with a one-way valve as it just introduces pressure drop into the pump outlet line. The pump will do a pretty good job of stopping the washer lines from draining back to the reservoir anyway. Using the lower outlet, you'll want to make this as large as possible. From memory, I cut off the restrictive nipple, and used a threaded air line connection screwed onto the bottle that gave me a nipple to slip a hose on to.

Finally, you need to vent the bottle to atmosphere so that the pump performs best. A piece of pipe or tube extending upwards from the top of the bottle or where you would normally attach a bike pump to will be fine, just route it such that liquid won't splash up into it and end up on your floor.

Just done this, nicked a PTM switch off our tech dept (work in school)

Easy and worked a treat. Just wired it into a switched live.

I used a similar pump motor to you. I just intend fitting a Jack Daniels bottle to the totum vent mount in the van to fit it too. As mentioned you need a tiny vent (hole in lid) just to stop it trying to suck the bottle flat (if it were plastic)
