I used a halfords 2 ft breaker bar with a 4ft scaffold tube slid over!! Thought i was going to do the same but all was good!
 
I just wanted to know if this was normal or not. I'll get a decent bar on it. I was standing and bouncing on to make this happen I'm amazed it didn't release

It's normal. After trying the same as you I put the engine and socket in the back of my car, drove to the nearest garage and he had it off in 2 seconds with an impact gun. No charge either ... I guess he had a soft spot for a classic VW :)
 
i bent a 4ft breaker bar with a 5ft scaff over it on mine ! in the end it took my mates air gun on it and even then he had to crank it up to about 360lbs to get it too budge :shock: which was just aswell as the gun maxed out at 400 ! . Tough little blighter's some times
 
Bloody hell I think I'll be taking it into work to get it undone then. I'm an aircraft engineer and so have acces to some monster breaker bars for 747 wheels and engine mount bolts not to mention the air tools

Good to hear you have access to power tools when needed. Rear axle nuts that haven't been off in a while can be a bugger too.
 
3/4" is better, but if you are struggling and need it off tomorrow, simple trick is to use two peeps with two bars, with one on each side, sort of double trouble but a lot easier on the bar itself 8)

It was a 1/2" drive just wasn't expecting a bolt that size to have such a massive torque. I will beat it tomorrow. I'm gonna measure the figure it cracks off at just for fun

Breaker bars aren't designed for putting scaff tubes over the end - if you can't get it off using man strength, either get down the gym or buy a longer breaker that will be designed to take the torque!

My one is though!!! It came with instructions that said,,, insert five foot scaffold tube over here and keep levering until the breaker bends :lol:
You are absolutely right of course,, but we all resort to leverage to get the job done with what we have available, I bought a cheapo 3/4" socket set off the E Bay for about £25, and yes it is real cheap and the sockets are awful in that the sizes aren`t consistent and the finish isn`t brilliant, but the sheer size of them makes them do the job. I did laugh about getting down the gym though,, can you imagine joining a gym and you`re asked why you`ve joined,,, and you have to tell them you got an Early Bay and need a bit more muscle to work on it :lol:

Ironically i didn't use a scaffold pole I used a barbell with no weights on maybe I should put some weight on it lol

Just go buy yourself a big ass breaker bar - they pay for themselves in times of need!

Highly recommend halfords pro stuff - lifetime warranty if you do end up breaking it (as long as you haven't obviously been tripling it's length with another bar!) :lol:

Try and borrow or even buy one of these makes such a difference and proper handy to have.
 
I won! At the expense of a 1/2" to 3/4" converter that sheared at the 1/2" section. I used a aircraft wheel change torque wrench that was showing 500lbs/ft when it sheared. Nice.

All hope was not lost as aircraft hardware is all imperial so we used a 3/4" drive 1inch 7/16" socket (same as36mm) a 4x torque converter and a bigger torque wrench. Came off fairly easily with some freezer spray.

I've ordered a new bolt as it's covered in corrosion :)
