I followed the great guide in the faq`s - came in really useful - but can i ask - when you came to refit new rivets in the hinge for the quarter light what did you use to refit them? I bought some new alumunium pins/rivets from custom and commercial which are the correct item, but i can`t see how they would fit into a rivet gun as they are blanked off on one end and don`t have a pin like a normal rivet!?

any ideas!? cheers, mike
 
I think they a peened over with a hammer and block. Pop rivets use a gun, normal rivets are usually hammerd into shape. A few gentle taps should see the rivet head flatten as i think they are ali. :)

Thats what i thought - just didn`t want to go attacking it with a hammer/blunt instrument before confirming someone else had done this :lol:

Ive not personally done it but i was looking at mine (ive got 4 on the crewcab :shock: ) and that seems he way they have been done. ive even got some the right size in a draw here :mrgreen: Hope it works out for you mate :D
 
Hiya mike,

I've seen this done - poorly - a number of times.

Here's what to do. Notice that the quarter light replacement rivet is hollow? You need to spread the hollow stem in order to properly seat the rivet. To do this you have to "make" a tool. Making this tool is just as simple as grabbing the longest hanled pair of pliers you can put hands on. Channel locks are good. Then you need to find a small ball bearing - larger than the diameter of the rivet stem. Place the ball bearing on the bottom jaw of the pliers and seat the rivet stem atop the ball bearing while the top jaw of the pliers is pressing against the rivet head. Now exert pressure on the plier handles and you should very neatly flare that rivet into place. The ball bearing will drop out and you'll be set to go
 
that sounds like a great idea - i was considering using some eyelet pliers that i have which would do a simliar job but the ball bearing (if i can find one!) sounds even better.
 
the original ones were infact brass and not aluminium, when i replaced mine i turned some up and used a similar method to the ball bearing one
 
i used a brass rivet dont forget there is a fiber washer in there aswell some were
 
I went lateral and used a stainless nut and bolt with the fibre washer as I couldn't find the correct rivet for love or money. It is a little bigger than the rivet so it needed just the slightest bit of drilling.`
It's worked out OK

i bought a whole new cab door rubbers set from custom and commercial - was pretty good value but they don`t include the rivet in the kit! Next time i call them (quite frequently at the mo!), i `ll mention this i think.

By the way, the one they sell looks just like the original and comes with the fibre washers - have`nt had time to fit it yet so can`t comment on the fitment.
 
Good thread. I've got the C&C bits and rivet and was wondering how to do this too. Going to look at my brake pipe flaring tools to see if they can be adapted to do the job.

i was going to post exactly the same thing. there are several adapters, one is bound to do the job.

couldn't agree more. I had bought the kit, had the old set up out then realised the existing rivet wouldn't do. C&C didn't have any in stock (they are about 40mins from me), how can you sell a kit without one of the most important parts?

My clever neighbour came to the rescue. I drilled the old one out and he turner me a new one in brass in about 10mins. He also turned a steel rod to a very flat 'point' which we used to turn the edge of the rivet over whilst holding the quarter upside down on a vice (one hit only mind). Very nice man.
