Just cleaning up my spare engine and found this:

Its made of plastic. Any ideas? Looks like I might have to split the cases :cry:

Don't worry, it's an old valve seal!
They get briddle and fall apart but the mesh from the oil filter will stop them from sucking up.
The seals are useless anyway
 
Could be the bottom of the fuel pump pedastal ?? thats made of Bakealite

Thanks bud.

The rubber hardens out trough the years of intens heat and indeed it feels and looks more like baklite then.
 
That's ok then. I'll whip off the heads, clean them up and pop some new seals on. It's not the bottom of the fuel pump pedestal; I just removed that, and although the top part was lunched, the bottom bit was sound. Thanks for your help everyone!
