ok, i had the fuel tank out the bus & while it was out i replaced the sender as the gauge has never moved since i had the van.
Before putting everything back i checked that everything was working ok by connecting the sender up & tilting it so the float moves up.
Sure enough the gauge registered fine when i tilted the sender so i bolted everything back in.
The problem is now the needle moves very slightly & is only just visible when the ignition is switched on & doesn't move from this spot no matter how much petrol is put in the tank .............. turn the ignition off & the needle disappears from view again ! :?

Any ideas , i ran out of petrol again today :(

Alas over the years I've settled for the randomness of VW fuel gauges as my bus never reads full &
drops from1/4 to empty in a flash

will be investigating a bit more at the weekend, cheers for your reply :)
