Got a new pump from JK about 4 years ago covering less than 3k miles and today whilst coming back from the MOT station,it passed but i broke down lost power but had lectric.
On closer inspection i saw/felt the pivot shaft hanging out, managed to push it back in by levering/fettling and it fired up.

Should this shaft be solidly fixed or are they made so as removeable??

Did you take the fuel pump off or where did you see the shaft hanging out?
If you take the pump off you can take the shaft out. It is not solidly fixed. It can be removed and replaced. But be carefull, depending on your pump style there are 2 different lenghts.

If the pump was off and the shaft was sticking out and was stuck in the hole then it makes sence that you broke down. The engione doens't get fuel. It also means that the shaft is either to thick or the hole it moves up and down in is to small causing it to get stuck because of the heat expansion.

It is not the shaft which goes up and down off the crankshaft but the one you see horizontal just behind the mounting points.
when i broke down i went through the usual check all leads and fuel cutoff solenoid (34 pict3 carb) etc then i noticed/felt around the back of the fuel pump and the said shaft was hanging out :?
so with a pair of snipe nose pliers i was able to reposition the hole by pressing it down and then pushed the shaft back into place as far as i could, turned it over and it fired straight away.
Must be some kind of pivot point inside the body where this said shaft works off the vertical rod which travels up and down off the crank (one is 100mm and the other is 108 mm depending on if you have a dyno or alty fitted).
Anyhow i removed the dissy today and took off both fuel pipes and removed pump and knocked the shaft back into place, starts first time.

My question is is this shaft loose fitting i.e are you able to remove it by means of a drift pin and hammer like the way i replaced it or should it be fixed permanent??

Don't fancy the idea of it falling out but atleast if it does there will not be any fuel leakage at all because the pump stops working altogether as i found out.

Sharky.

Sorry mate, I misunderstood. I don't know if it is permanently fixed. I would say no, but that's only a guess.
Why not go for another one and keep this as a spare?

I had the same problem while on the M25 a few years ago.;)
Some of the new crappy pumps have the shaft pressed into the pump body, so it works loose eventually, some of them have a circlip on each end. You must have the pressed sort. I swapped mine for an old piersburg one after that happened:)
