OK, there's a big long tube going from the gearbox of your van all the way to between your front seats, under the floor. Within that tube there are 3 bushes shaped somewhat like shuttlecocks- the rear two of these are very difficult to get out as you need to remove the engine and gearbox.
That leaves you with 4 possibilities for improving your gear change:
There's a clevis style arrangement just in front of the nosecone on your gearbox. You can change the rubbers on that for £10 if they're worn, I'd re-use the old metal framework though if you can.
There's the third shuttlecock, which you may or may not be able to access- you need to disconnect the clevis fella and the front gear shift rod (runs from between the front seats to under the gear lever- all under the floor). There's some debate on how easy it is to get this out. Remove both ends and push the long shift rod in it's tube towards the front to try to access it.
There's the very front bush, I just did this today as it happens. Gear lever off, little joining bolt (between the front seats under the car) undone to seperate the two shift rods) and it's in the front section of the front shift rod.
Finally there's the throw of the lever assembly itself- you can reduce this for £10 or so using one of those quick-shift kits. Personally I think they're great, though I'd get the metal version. They basically do the same thing as an EMPI or SCAT shifter for much less money.
