Had a phone call from a mate whos a mechanic, hes been given a 71 t2 camper to repair.

The man who owns the van knows nought about vans but has had the clutch replaiced (we dont know if he done it himself) cos he was having problems getting gears.

The problem is when it gets in gear, which is hard to get in gear, you try to pull off and the van wants to go but doesnt, its like the brakes are stuck on, cant get neutral, but in another gear it goes.

The van has an empi shifter fitted, when removed there is no pin in the ball, like the stock one on my van is this right?

so he selects a gear goes to pull away and ?

it just revs going nowhere
the engine struggles/stalls cos theres no forward momentum

he cant find neutral?

at all
when the engine is running
when in another gear he cant re-select neutral

which gears is he actually having probs with?

When in a gear tries to pull away, van judders and stops, its like the brakes are seized on but they are not. Could it be poss that the van is selecting two gears?????

Gear selection on all of them, is a problem, When in gear it wont come out of gear, cant get neutral at all.

maybe you're only selecting 3rd or 4th, if theres alot of play in the gear rod supports its difficult to move between the 1/2 and 3/4 gates

can you get reverse?

re-reading, if you cant ever get neutral surely youre stuck in a high gear?

have a look underneath the floor where the gear lever is whilst someone is trying to move between the gears

I would whip the engine out and check the clutch just in case. I had a new one fitted on the notch and it only lasted 3 weeks till one of the fingers snapped and i had similiar probs 8)
