I am sorry because I am sure this question has been asked hundreds of times but here I go:

I am trying to set up the gear selection on my 71 bus which has an Empi gear stick. I am a new owner ( 2 weeks) and the previous owner had not set it up and I am looking for tips, please!

Update: I did find reverse today albeit briefly!

I adjusted by trial and error, tightening up the plate..check movement and position of stick feels correct. To adjust loosen bolts slightly and move stick so that plate moves, re tighten and test.
If gears aren't selecting then check small screw on coupling is tight, this is just in front of gearbox, should have wire to stop it loosening, don't over tighten this screw though as thread is weak on aftermarket item.

Below are common items which require replacement due to wear and tear:

The bushes require dropping gearbox and removing the gear selector rod, not as bad as it sounds..even I have managed this and I'm not mechanically minded.

Thanks everyone, I had another play with the gear linkage today and discovered that the coupler near the gearbox was faulty - 3 spots of weld by my latebay buddy and we are all up and running.

Happy Days :D
