Gearbox advice pleas

I’ve got 71 dorma with a 1641 in it I’ve taken the engine and gearbox out to sort a few oil leaks and to do a few tweaks( eg new cam slightly porting the head etc) and to sort the rust out above the gearbox area so .......... my gearbox has always whined slightly which has never bothered me but I’m tempted to put a beetle gearbox in it whilst I’m sort things out So if I do change it which one do I need and what do I have to change to make it fit with out spending a fortune. also final ratio codes is it the higher the number the less rpm or is it the lower the number the less rpm. Don’t waste your time with a beetle box, send yours to John Walkett and have him rebuild it into a freeway flyer for the same result of better cruising.
