just taken engine out off van
bell housing full off oil i know oil seal gone on input shaft. i now no why van was noisey over 40mph no bloody oil in box i guess .question is do i repair or should i just get new box

Input shaft does have play when no engine in I think mine had about 10 to 15mm up and down.
The end of the shaft is supported by the bearing in the fly wheel.

What does your gear box drain plug look like, it will probably have some iron filings stuck to the magnet, thats normal as long as it doesnt look like a porcupine, but if you have lumps of metal then it will indicate more sever damage.

If it were me, I would refill the box with a good oil and maybe some thing like prolong and run it around, if its making loads of noise then it maybe time for a new box, but new oil will be the cheaper option to start with.

I think the 10-15 mm is a bit out, I just checked 3 boxes I got lying around (2 good, 1 for breaking) & the most movement was about 3 mm

cant remember how much play exactly but knew it had some when I last took the engine out, I would still refill the box and run it before buying another.
