Hi
I'm a new member and a newbie to the scene and was after some advice on my 1970 lhd westy which I'm currently restoring I've Have had an engine rebuild brake overhaul etc, the trouble I have is the gears it seems to want to jump out of first gear all the time all the other gears are fine and easy to select.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciate!

Cheers darren :(

I'm not an expert, but it if it stays in gear fine, until you came off the throttle, then it pops out of gear, it could be a worn synchro-mesh on 1st gear.

Can you put it directly back into 1st gear or do you need to go to neutral before engaging 1st. This is called double de-clutching and was something that you used to have to do on older vehicles that did not have a synchro-mesh on first gear.

Regards
Pete

Hi
I'm in the norwich area (East anglia) and thanks for your replies fellas it's much appreciated ;)
It's in a local garage at the mo so I'll pass on your advice and see if we can sort it I'll let u kno how we get on!

Hi Darren
Build my own engines but when it comes to gearbox rebuilds you really need an expert
I dropped my box to Paul at bears racing, just south of Birmingham
They couldn't be more helpful
They striped and checked the box, new seals, replaced and welded 3rd & 4th gears, installed a new ring & pinion ( freeway flyer set from weddle in the states which I supplied ) & even replaced all the nuts & a flick of paint
All for under £300
Can't go wrong
Mike

Hi Darren,

Welcome aboard.

If you need an Air-cooled specialist then Paul Johnson, at Mid-Norfolk air cooled in Swaffham, is the one I use and I can't recommend him highly enough.

He's not a gearbox specialist but should be able to advise you on that and anything else.

Hi
That's great help fellas cheers and thanks for the warm welcome I'm gonna get the gearbox out next week at some point and get it off some where to be sorted out I'll try the place in swafham giv em bell see what he says I do hav a couple of numbers up me sleeve to try also.
I'll keep ya posted how I get on and when I sus it out I'll post some pics of me bus in its progress :D

Darren

Thanks ,,
good luck with your resto , dont rush it like I did. Wife's friend was getting married and wanted to use Dani. I managed to get it booked in but only bare metal spray job on the outside. he could only fit me in between to jobs. And it still wasn't finished in time for the wedding. Had to hire one for the wedding instead. Last minute in July down in Devon we could only find one in the whole of the south west and that had to be back by early morning the next day. night mare!
Have you got any pics of your resto, love to see them.

Thanks again
Nigel
